I grew up watching my mom and my abuelita cook, celebrate, and hold on to the things that made us Guatemalan. It wasn't until I was an adult that I found one more piece of that. The weaving.
When I first started learning about Guatemalan textiles, I couldn't stop. Every hand-loomed fabric has a different origin, a different story, a different family behind it. My mom Cony and I started traveling to Guatemala together to find the best weavers in the country. What started as a personal obsession turned into something we couldn't ignore.
The artisans we met were extraordinary. Their methods are ancient and rigorous and take years to learn. But reliable income? That was harder to come by. We wanted to change that.
In 2013, I started Nena & Co. To turn these textiles into bags and accessories that would do three things: honor the craft, pay the makers fairly, and give people who love beautiful, meaningful things something they'd never find at a mall.
My mom still calls me Nena. Spanish for "darling". Which is where the name comes from. She's still my business partner. We still make the sourcing trips together.
